Pregnancy has taught me a new definition of many things that I took for granted. Below are a few of the standard definitions compared to my new understanding vs. what I think Sarah's new viewpoint is.

1. Sleep: A natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually closed and consciousness is completely or partially lost, so that there is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli.

Isaiah's new Sleep: An immediate passing out from exhaustion at the end of the day. Staying on your 1/4 of the bed as much as you can, but supposedly kneeing your wife in the back every once in a while until you get up and your wife takes your pillow.

Sarah's new Sleep: Turning the lights off and listening to your husband snore, followed by restlessness and tossing and turning for several hours. Getting up at least 4 times to pee, and just when you think you will rest, a small alien creature kicks you in the ribs. Saying that she has no room because my butt is as big as her belly. When your husband finally gets up, move to his pillow, take over the whole bed, and snuggle with the dogs.

2. HungerA strong desire or need for food.

Isaiah's new Hunger: Regular cravings for sweet treats before and after typical meals.

Sarah's new Hunger: Attempting to fill the bottomless pit aka black hole with something delectable. The need to eat yummy treats, especially ice cream, grapes, and mac & cheese. Always feeling like you're full, but still wandering to the kitchen to snack on something. Drinking milkshakes and icees like a car uses gasoline.

3. WorkoutA strenuous test of ability and endurance.

Isaiah's new Workout: Cleaning the kitchen, living room, kitchen, basement, bedrooms, and bathrooms in one day.

Sarah's new Workout: Going up the stairs and/or getting into or out of a bed that is too high. Walking the dogs.

4. Slim fit clothingSlim-fit trousersshirtsetc. that fit your body quite closely.

Isaiah's new slim fit clothing: Gaining a pound or two because of sympathy weight.

Sarah's new slim fit clothing: Wearing your husband's t-shirts and still having some "breathing room" for your belly button. Putting on a maternity outfit from week 18 at week 38. Watching your maternity clothes get smaller as your belly gets bigger. Wanting new clothes but knowing you won't have a belly in a few weeks.

All in all my viewpoint on many things has changed. I've come to appreciate that something that may be a little bit annoying for me, may actually be really hard for my wife. Things that I normally don't really think twice about like eating, sleeping or going to the bathroom have actually become quite difficult for Sarah. I can't really imagine what it would be like to have so many little things changed in my life all at once.
I've also thought about how much of a wimp I may actually be. I remember having cramps after sprints in sports, but I've never been kicked in the ribs, or punched in the kidney. I think it all comes together to make Moms so special. She learns to put herself second sometimes in a way that she is actually forced to do.
As a dad, I've been lucky enough to catch on to this fact at this point in the game. I've learned that life will be much different. Little things like driving in the car or taking a shower will never be the same.

The good news is that I'm stoked, and I can't wait to have a new definition of Isaiah; Father.
