a boy and his dog.

when we were pregnant, theres no doubt that we worried about how our dogs would get along with our baby. i would play you tube videos of babies crying while i hopped in the shower, babies laughing, cooing and all sorts. we made sure that we didn't set up anything of C's in a space that they loved. we brought the mamaroo and RnP in to our room before he was born, and we got the dogs a new bed of their own. any time we were in the nursery to prepare that whether it was putting away clothes, painting or building the crib - we allowed the dogs to be in there with us. we let them sniff all of the clothes we had bought and check out all of his toys. when C was born, we sent home his swaddle blanket and hat from the hospital before we arrived so they could get his sense of smell - and when we walked through the door with the baby in our hands - we had presents for both Lambeau and Lucy too.

first family walk/6 days old

Lucy is skittish. she has always been that way with kids. our neighbors will always chase her like crazy when they see us on a walk and she will stop dead in her tracks. she's even peed on the spot! over time, she's figured out a way to just ignore them in general. she's always been pretty independent. definitely a daddy's girl too.
Lambeau on the other hand - is complete opposite. he is a mommas boy through and through. Beau is needy to the extreme. he loves all people and all things. obsessed with being touched and pet. i was most worried about how Beau would adjust since he was more of the jealous type. we can never pet Lucy without him coming right over, whining and shoving himself under our hands as he pushes Lucy away. "pet me too pet me too!"

in the beginning, neither of them cared for C. they ignored him entirely and paid no attention. just now over the last month or two, they've both started to accept him. i'm not sure if its that they finally realize he isn't leaving our home or if its that they're noticing he's becoming more of another person vs. a squishy newborn that makes weird noises? but it was going fairly well! neither of them mind being near him and Beau will always lay by him. Beau is obsessed with licking C whenever he can, so gross! Lucy will tend to him when he's in the jumper because she knows that he can't get her.
i will say now that C is crawling, they are both tending back again. Lucy will get close to him, give a little bark and wait for him to crawl after her, then she runs away only to return and do it again - so i think she's trying to play but isn't sure why he doesn't come after her right away or why it takes so long. Lambeau is lazy pazy so C is always crawling on top of him. we've noticed that C has been starting to get handfuls of fur and tug on Beau so were on super close watch. i would NEVER want an accident to happen between our baby and our fur babies.

overall, things are so far so good! it wasn't the best experience i had hoped for but maybe that will come as C gets older. it sure wasn't the worst experience that could have happened though, and im so thankful for that!

  6. LOVE these pics!! This makes me hopeful for Murphy and Maverick! Murphy ignores him most of the time and in fact if they are both in the chair with Daddy Murph wont even look at Mav. LOL

  7. So happy about this post! I was just talking in my WB due date group about how Walter and Winnie (my corgis) might adjust to our baby when she is born. I'm taking a lot of the same steps you did with allowing them in the nursery and giving them time to adjust to new pieces of furniture or gear... good call sending home the swaddle blanket so they can get the scent before baby comes home! Your shibas are so beautiful, BTW!

  9. How freaking cute is C with your pup?!!!
We (I) have a hard time finding balance for both M and Drake. Drake does SO well with M. I just wish I had a little more patience left over for Drake. :( On that note, I'm off to give Drake some snuggles.

  10. Our puppy rough houses a lot with Olive and it scares me sometimes... but on the other hand, it keeps her on her toes. C-man is such a little stud muffin!

  11. such a sweet post!

I hope our dog would be the same if we ever had a baby. He is so jealous now of anyone that comes next to me. even the BF.

  13. Aww they are so cute together! I can't wait to see how things change once C gets older. I think you are right, that now that he's becoming more of a "person", they like being around him more.
